Mills Pennebaker received both her BA and MA degrees from the College of Charleston, where she studied legacies of slavery and forms of Black resistance in local communities. Her research examines historically excluded narratives of race, labor, gender, and class, with a particular focus on the US South and Carolina/Georgia Lowcountry region. As a public historian, Mills centers her work around ideas of shared authority, community collaboration, and public engagement with the past.
